Newcastle United are still in the hunt for new signings as they look to strengthen the squad this summer. But things haven’t gone entirely to plan so far.
One major target, Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, has made it clear he doesn’t want a move to St. James’ Park.
Despite scoring 20 goals last season and attracting serious interest from top clubs, the forward prefers a switch to Manchester United instead.
That’s a tough blow for the Magpies, especially with attacking options already being a priority this summer.
With that door now closed, Newcastle have had to look elsewhere and it seems a new opportunity may have just opened up.
Newcastle United eye Manchester City star after Brentford blow
According to The Chronicle, the club has now been alerted to the availability of a young talent from Manchester City who could fit perfectly into Eddie Howe’s long-term vision.
The player is only 22, English, and already has top-flight experience under his belt.
He’s spent time out on loan and shown real promise, proving he’s ready for the next step. That player is James McAtee.
Despite Pep Guardiola being a fan of the youngster, Man City’s midfield is so stacked with talent that McAtee is unlikely to get the regular minutes he needs.
That’s why they’re now open to offers, and Newcastle could be ready to make a move.
McAtee isn’t just a one-position player he can play in central midfield and out wide, which is something Howe loves in a squad member.
And while Newcastle already have big names like Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, and Sandro Tonali, there could be space for someone like McAtee if players like Sean Longstaff or Joe Willock move on.
Manchester City wants £20 million for James McAtee which could be a smart investment for the future.
