Newcastle United have made it clear they want to strengthen this summer but one key area may prove trickier than expected. The club are on the lookout for a long-term successor to Nick Pope.

While Pope remains an important figure at St James’ Park, injuries and age have made the need for a younger option more urgent.

Newcastle want someone who can grow into the role and eventually take over as first-choice between the sticks.

However, according to Football Insider, one of their top targets might already be slipping out of reach.

The Magpies have identified a goalkeeper with Premier League experience and potential to match.

The player has been under the spotlight for some time and is believed to fit exactly what Eddie Howe is looking for in terms of shot-stopping ability and composure on the ball. But price could be the problem.

Burnley have returned to the Premier League and manager Scott Parker wants to build his team around the best young talents at the club.

That means they’re not ready to let go of their most valuable assets; at least not cheaply.

James Trafford is the player in question. The 21-year-old is seen by many inside the club as the perfect long-term replacement for Pope.

Trafford has already shown promise and a calm presence for someone his age.

Newcastle remain interested, but Football Insider claims they may be forced to pay over the odds if they want to get this deal done.

Burnley reportedly have no intention of letting Trafford leave without a fight, and with the club back in the top flight, they don’t need to sell.

While the Magpies continue to keep tabs on James Trafford, they may have to start looking at alternative options if Burnley don’t soften their stance.

With financial fair play rules and other key areas also needing investment, this could be a decision Newcastle are forced to make carefully.
