Newcastle United have made their first big move of the summer but it hasn’t gone to plan.

Fresh off a historic season that saw us win the Carabao Cup and book our place back in the Champions League, we’re now turning our focus to squad depth. One area that clearly needs attention is the wide forward role.

With Callum Wilson likely to move on and no direct replacement for Miguel Almiron yet, Newcastle need more speed and energy on the flanks. The aim is to sign a player who already knows the Premier League and can hit the ground running.

The club have had their eye on a winger who impressed last season with his pace, sharp dribbling, and end product. He’s quick, direct, and only 22, someone who could grow under Eddie Howe’s guidance and help take us to the next level.

That’s why, according to The Athletic, Newcastle submitted a £45 million bid for Anthony Elanga, who currently plays for Nottingham Forest.

Elanga had a strong year at Forest, chipping in with goals and assists and stretching defences with his runs. He’s also an international player for Sweden and already has experience playing in high-pressure games from his time at Manchester United.

But Newcastle’s approach was turned down right away. Forest made it clear they don’t want to sell, and they didn’t even respond with a counteroffer.

That’s left us with a decision to make. Do we go back in with a bigger bid? Or move on to another target?

One thing’s for sure this summer is going to be busy on Tyneside. And if Elanga isn’t the one, someone else will be. The project is too exciting for top players to ignore.
