According to ChronicleLive’s Lee Ryder, the Magpies have been offered the chance to sign Jonathan Tah – with the Bayer Leverkusen star’s details sent directly to recruitment staff ahead of the summer transfer window.
And this is no new name on the radar. As we previously reported, Newcastle were interested in the Germany international last year. Now, with Tah set to leave Leverkusen as a free agent, the club are considering reigniting their pursuit.
The opportunity has presented itself at a key moment.
Newcastle reignite interest in Bundesliga star as defensive rebuild begins
Newcastle need to strengthen their defence this summer. Sven Botman has suffered recurring injuries. Dan Burn, Fabian Schär and Jamaal Lascelles are all into their thirties. The club want a younger, high-quality option who can raise the level.
Names like Marc Guehi and Jarell Quansah have been linked. But Tah’s availability on a free transfer could allow Paul Mitchell to invest in other key areas – namely right wing and goalkeeper – without compromising on defensive quality.

Tah has been a cornerstone of Leverkusen’s success under Xabi Alonso. Strong, composed and experienced, he has earned praise from some of Europe’s best managers – including new Liverpool boss Arne Slot, who described him as “a real good defender” and “maybe the best defender in Germany.”
But Newcastle are not alone. Liverpool and Manchester United are also monitoring the 28-year-old ahead of a potential move.
That said, Newcastle have shown they can win these battles before. And if Champions League football returns to St James’ Park, it might just tilt the balance in their favour once again.
