Newcastle United are preparing to go head-to-head with Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona in the race to sign highly-rated Albacete striker Christian Kofane this summer.

According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, the Magpies are serious contenders for the 18-year-old Cameroonian, with new sporting director Paul Mitchell believed to be a strong admirer of the teenager.

We previously reported the Newcastle transfer news about Newcastle’s interest in Kofane, and that interest is now intensifying, according to Lee Ryder of ChronicleLive. With the club navigating potential PSR constraints, Mitchell is believed to be targeting smart, affordable deals that offer long-term upside — and Kofane fits the brief perfectly.

Despite his age, Kofane has already netted six goals in just 16 appearances for Albacete in Spain’s second tier this calendar year. His mix of physicality, pace and technical quality has made him one of the most talked-about young forwards in Spanish football.

That rise has not gone unnoticed. Alongside Newcastle, the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Real Betis, Lille and Monaco are all monitoring his progress. But the Magpies are not backing down from the challenge.

With Callum Wilson likely to depart when his contract expires, and speculation continuing to swirl around Alexander Isak’s future, Newcastle are actively seeking attacking reinforcements this summer.

While Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap has been considered, his valuation may prove restrictive. Kofane, in contrast, represents a cost-effective alternative with significant upside — a potential long-term asset who could develop under Eddie Howe’s coaching.

Mitchell's track record in unearthing talent at Monaco and RB Leipzig has already begun to influence Newcastle's summer approach. Kofane is viewed as a priority target in this evolving recruitment model.

This is not the first time Newcastle have taken on — and beaten — Spanish giants to a young prospect. The Magpies recently secured a deal for Malaga attacker Antonio Cordero, fending off interest from both Real Madrid and Barcelona. That agreement is expected to be confirmed once Cordero’s contract expires at the end of the season.

With Kofane, Newcastle could pull off a similar coup — and reinforce their growing reputation as a serious destination for Europe’s best emerging talent.

The battle for Christian Kofane is just getting started, but Newcastle United are very much in it.
