Newcastle United’s search for a new striker has been ongoing throughout the summer, yet they find themselves back where they started, having seen their latest bid for Yoane Wissa rejected. Meanwhile, the Alexander Isak saga continues with no clear indication of whether he will stay or leave.
At the same time, it appears the Magpies aren’t just looking for a replacement for their primary striker, they’re also trying to further reinforce their backline, despite the recent acquisition of Malick Thiaw from AC Milan as reports suggest Newcastle are showing interest in a Manchester City defender.
According to TeamTalk, Newcastle United are keen on signing Nathan Ake, who is also a target for Everton. The Dutch defender is reportedly seeking more regular playing time, which could prompt a move this summer and St. James’ Park might be his next destination.
Newcastle United interested in Manchester City’s Nathan Ake
Nathan Ake joined Manchester City in 2020 from Bournemouth for a fee of €45.3 million. The Dutch international has made 146 appearances for the Citizens. Recently, his game time has been limited due to strong competition from players like Josko Gvardiol, Ruben Dias, Manuel Akanji and other defenders.
Frankly, Newcastle have other areas they may want to prioritise, having already brought in Malick Thiaw. While Ake is certainly a capable defender, the fact that the former Chelsea player is now 30 years old raises questions about whether he would be a good long-term investment.
That said, Newcastle were hit with an injury crisis at the heart of their defence last season following the sidelining of Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman. So it might not be a bad idea to have quality backups ready, especially considering the high number of games each season in recent years. With just a week left before the transfer window closes, it remains to be seen how the club will proceed.
