Newcastle United's 2024/25 campaign has been getting worse and worse. Although the side was off to some quick points in the initial games, going winless in the last 5 games now, as Chelsea edge past them at Stamford Bridge, has been disastrous for the club. While certainly backed by previous excellent records, it was certain Chelsea wouldn't let the fixture be any easy for Newcastle; much hope was from Eddie Howe's side, but they failed yet again.
Newcastle in alarming situation after 5 winless games as Chelsea edge past them 2-1
Early in the matchday, Newcastle faced a massive setback as they had to start the fixture without their star winger Gordon, who was ruled out due to groin issues. Already missing veteran star Callum Wilson and then Gordon's sideline, the fixture's result had been pretty much decided even before it started.
From the very beginning, the Blues were at the top of the game, never letting Newcastle breathe in relief. In the 5th minute only, Chelsea had come pretty close to getting the lead through Cole Palmer's brilliant finish; however, an offside call saved Newcastle. However, given the intent with which Enzo Maresca's side had come in, it was certain that the scoreline wouldn't remain such for long, and that's what happened.
In the 18th minute, Palmer fueled a counterattack, finding Neto in the process, who, with a brilliant cross, found Jackson in front of the goal, making no mistake and giving them the lead. However, the Magpies club found the perfect response to the go-ahead goal soon, as Swedish star Isak pulled up his second goal of the season for Newcastle. Of a sensational cross from prodigy Lewis Hall on the left, Isak, with not much difficulty, equalized it for the Magpies.
But little did they know that their happiness was short-lived, as Palmer demonstrated his plans clearly, starting the second hall by restoring their lead again. Although the first time Newcastle got saved due to an offside, this time they had no response to Palmer's brilliance, who, with a smart finish, put the hosts ahead again in the 47th minute. The 2-1 goal, in a way, demolished Newcastle's spirits, with the side looking much less competent to the hosts in the remaining minutes.
The scoreline of 2-1 remained the same till the end, as Chelsea continued their dominance at their fortress against Newcastle. Losing on a chance of crucial points yet again, Eddie Howe's side now finds itself in the 12th position, having just 12 points from 9 matchdays. Going forward, the Magpies are scheduled to meet Chelsea again, but this time being the hosts, as they hope to keep their chances of the EFL trophy alive.
