Lewis Hall has established himself as a fan favourite on Tyneside, from his tremendous work rate in supporting the attack to his defensive efforts that earn applause at St James' Park.

The international break gave the 22-year-old was a chance to show what Newcastle fans already knew about him. After a heart-breaking and unjustified World Cup snub in the summer, followed by an overwhelmingly positive start to the season, Hall's time came to shine on the international stage.

Hall finally took his highly anticipated place in a Thomas Tuchel England squad during the international break, after his strong start to the season made it impossible not to include him.

Although Hall didn’t play the first game, his chance finally came after Nico O'Reilly withdrew with an injury; he started against the Czech Republic and remained in the squad for the next two games.

His partnership with Anthony Gordon was key, given the chemistry they nurtured over years together on Tyneside. Hall is a left-back who has both attacking and defensive capabilities, which can cause big problems for opposition with his forward-thinking runs and creative tendencies. But also his ability to pocket wingers in 1v1 situations.

It's no surprise that England kept a clean sheet in all three games he started. Hall even picked up an assist at Wembley on Tuesday night after a whipped delivery from a corner, which Harry Kane headed home.

Hall's England performance is no surprise to Newcastle fans.

If you have watched Hall since he arrived at Newcastle in 2023, then his performances for England will have been no surprise, as he showed everything that has made him one of the best left-backs in the Premier League over the last year.

Newcastle fans love his work rate, defensive effort, and ability to keep the team moving forward at high intensity with a relentless press.

In the first leg of last season's Champions League round of 16 tie against Barcelona, when the Magpies hosted, Hall kept Lamine Yamal quiet for much of the 90 minutes, whilst also showing a comprehensive forward threat and constantly putting the young winger on the back foot.

From doubts to full praise

There were some reservations about Hall from those who don’t watch him week in week out. But, after the current set of England international fixtures, there is more confidence in the 22-year-old and everyone has seen what Newcastle fans have been raving about for the last couple of seasons.

The doubters have been silenced, barring some of the more stubborn ones, and conversations about whether he is the best left-back in the league will no longer consist of merely blind Geordie faith.

He made his way back into the England starting 11 for the first time since his full debut in 2024, and after strong performances so far this season for Newcastle, he is operating at a different level than other English left-backs.

Hall now returns to Newcastle from the break confident and hungry, which will benefit the Magpies and earn him even more praise. Now it's about making an ongoing statement that he deserves to remain the permanent left-back for both club and country.
