Newcastle United’s search for defensive reinforcements may have hit a roadblock not because of budget, not because of availability, but due to the player’s own continental dream.

Eddie Howe wants more quality and consistency at the back. The Magpies have spent this season juggling injuries and form issues across the defence, and with European football firmly in their sights, depth is now more important than ever.

That has led the club to focus on players with Premier League experience defenders who know the pace and pressure of the English game, but still have years of development ahead of them.

The aim is to find someone who can challenge Botman and Schär immediately, yet also lead the backline in seasons to come. One name ticks every box. But there is a catch.

La Liga giants enter the race for Newcastle United target

According to The Sun, the player Newcastle admire is open to a move this summer but not necessarily to another Premier League side. Instead, his sights are firmly set on Spain.

In fact, he is reportedly willing to run down his current contract in order to wait for a move to La Liga in 2026. That would leave Newcastle, along with Chelsea, facing an uphill task.

The defender in question has made a name for himself with standout performances, combining solid defending with composure in possession.

He is already an England international and has drawn praise for his leadership qualities despite his relatively young age. Marc Guehi is the player being monitored.

The 24-year-old centre-back, who came through Chelsea’s academy and now stars for Crystal Palace, has been one of the most reliable defenders outside the Premier League’s traditional top six.

He is exactly the type of player Newcastle need to take the next step. But if Real Madrid or Barcelona come calling or if Guehi is determined to wait for them, Newcastle may have no choice but to look elsewhere.
