Jamie Carragher considers Newcastle star key in England's new setup

Newcastle United's 2024/25 campaign so far has been quite underwhelming. Although it has been clearly influenced by the club's serious injury concerns and the aftermath of a poor transfer window, the form of the club's big names hasn't been convincing either. However, despite this, recent reports suggest that former PL star and now pundit considers a Toon star much more valuable to his national side.

23-year-old Magpies star Anthony Gordon, who in his last and a half campaign has emerged as one of the biggest wing forwards in PL, is considered a crucial component of England's new setup by Jamie Carragher. Although the wing star has had a tough start to the new season, Carragher named the forward in England's possible XI under Thomas Tuchel.

Although with a plethora of options available, Carragher explained why he chose the Toon star to adorn the left wing. In his words,

"“And right now, I would play Gordon there because if [Harry] Kane for me is still England’s best center-forward, you still need pace around him.”"

Clearly, while there are considerable alternatives to Gordon's conventional role, the 23-year-old most closely resembles the ideal profile the English setup needs. Already having a veteran striker, Harry Kane, at the front, one of the only concerns for the attack force remains to create chances for the Bayern striker upfront. And in that, clearly, Anthony Gordon has established himself as one of the best in the top-5 leagues.
