Newcastle United’s squad could look very different by the time next season kicks off.

And while most of the focus has been on who might arrive, one potential departure is beginning to take shape behind the scenes.

Eddie Howe is expected to oversee a significant reshuffle this summer.

With the Magpies securing Champions League qualification, there is a growing belief that a few tough decisions will be made in order to push the club to the next level.

Among the names at risk, one long-serving player now looks increasingly likely to move on.

Everton eye Newcastle United midfielder for summer transfer

According to Football Insider, Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff is edging closer to a summer switch to Everton, with the Toffees preparing to revamp their own squad ahead of a historic move to the new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium.

Longstaff’s contract at St James’ Park runs out in 2026, but with just 12 months left heading into the new season, Newcastle are reportedly open to cashing in.

The 26-year-old has been a loyal servant to the club and played a crucial role in their Carabao Cup triumph earlier this season, but competition in midfield is only set to grow.

Everton, now under the guidance of David Moyes, view Longstaff as a valuable addition to bolster their engine room – particularly with Abdoulaye Doucoure attracting interest from Saudi Arabia.

For Newcastle, this could be the beginning of a broader midfield rebuild. The club remain interested in bringing in at least one new central midfielder this summer, and moving on fringe players could help create both space and financial flexibility.

Longstaff’s potential exit would mark the end of a long chapter in black and white – but with the club’s ambitions growing, the timing may be right.
