Newcastle United face Chelsea in the quarter final of the EFL Cup – But will Lewis Hall be eligible to play for Newcastle vs Chelsea?

Lewis Hall started for Newcastle in their Carabao Cup fixture against Manchester United last night – Not only did he start the match, but he impressed the away end by scoring a goal in the emphatic 3-0 win for the Magpies.

In our Newcastle player ratings, the youngster who is on loan from Chelsea was granted a solid 7.5/10 with his performance lauded as an “assured display in midfield with a lot of play running through him”.

But as Eddie Howe looks ahead to the quarter final of the competition, where he faces another away visit to Stamford Bridge, is Lewis Hall eligible to play?

Will Lewis Hall play for Newcastle vs Chelsea in the Carabao Cup tie?

We know from experience that in the Premier League, loaned players are ineligible to play against their parent club. However, the rules are a little bit more relaxed in the EFL Carabao Cup. Let’s take a look…

As reported expertly by Newcastle World, the EFL rulebook essentially states that unless given permission by the parent club, a loaned player is automatically ineligible to play against their parent club. Therefore, unless Chelsea grant Lewis Hall permission to play against them, he will be unavailable for selection by Eddie Howe.

As their parent club, Chelsea could grant permission for Hall to play in this high-stakes match against top opposition. After all, it would be in their best interest to allow him to get the experience needed for his development.

However, at the end of the day, they want to win and progress to the semifinals themselves. So, it will be interesting to see whether Chelsea let us play Hall. We certainly hope so.

Do you think Chelsea will allow Lewis Hall to play against them?
