Newcastle United and Sandro Tonali find themselves in a period of unknown as the Italian midfielder is facing time out of the game for admitting gambling issues, with bets placed on AC Milan to win while Sandro Tonali was at the Rossoneri.

His assistance with the Italian Football Federation can give him some leeway in terms of the inevitable period of suspension, however, it is highly probable that he will be banned for the rest of the season, which will leave Eddie Howe with a shortage of midfielders. A fate to be learned in the next 48 hours.

Joe Willock’s injury and Joelinton’s issues with his knee have likely left Howe wanting for the situation to play out a little while the Italian is currently able to play in the Premier League and the Champions League.

The lead-up to January is crucial for the transfer window, as preparation has proven to be key for both Newcastle and the Public Investment Fund (PIF) thus far.

The initial £55 million Tonali deal had impacted their transfer funds and plans for the upcoming season, with Financial Fair Play (FFP) restrictions having a major influence on their summer spending. Now, there is a need for change, with reports suggesting that significant investments are being prepared to establish Newcastle as a regular Top 4 side.

So, what central midfield options are looking the most likely to replace Sandro Tonali with speculation becoming ever more intense as we approach January?
