According to the Times, Newcastle United did make a late bid in the summer transfer window to sign Tottenham Hotspurs legend, Hugo Lloris on a loan deal.

Newcastle United was the surprise package for many people last season. The Magpies certainly punched above their weight to finish fourth and qualify for the Champions League after 20 years. The Tyneside has started this season decently. During the summer transfer window, Newcastle were linked to so many players. However, there was one late bid from Newcastle that no one even talked about. Yes, Eddie Howe and Newcastle wanted to sign a Tottenham Hotspurs legend during the last hours of the transfer window and his name is Hugo Lloris. The French goalkeeper and World Cup winner is out of favour at Spurs and could have done a lot better by accepting the loan deal from the Magpies that he rejected. According to Sky Sports, the Times has reported this story.

Does Newcastle United need Hugo Lloris?

To be fair, Newcastle have a very strong goalkeeping squad. Nick Pope has been terrific this season. Also, Martin Dubravka can do a job whenever Eddie Howe needs him. Apart from that, Loris Karius who was in the goal when the Magpies faced Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final last year at the Wembley, is also there. So, it would have been unnecessary for Newcastle to look for another goalkeeper and that too of the stature of Hugo Lloris. Having two keepers who could be the number one choice would create confusion in the team. Also, Lloris is no longer the first-choice keeper for Spurs and that shows the drop off in quality of the French keeper. Thus, Lloris rejecting Newcastle’s offer was surely a blessing in disguise for the Magpies.

Do you think Newcastle dodged a bullet by not signing Hugo Lloris?
