On Sunday, July 23, former Newcastle United player Shaka Hislop collapsed on live television in front of millions of viewers.
Hislop was in the middle of pregame coverage of AC Milan and Real Madrid’s Rose Bowl clash, before he fell to the ground, shocking his partner Dan Thomas.
The incident caused a spur on social media with countless people expressing their concerns for the situation. However, Thomas reported at the halftime break that Hislop was conscious and responding to the first responders.
“My mate, Shaka, not here, but as it stands, it’s good news. He’s conscious, he’s talking, I think he’s a little embarrassed about it all,” said Thomas.
He went on to discuss that there was no official reason for the situation and that it was far too early for anyone to make any claims about why he fell to the ground.
Thomas also reassured the friends and family of Hislop that everything was under control.
“Obviously far too early to make any sort of diagnosis, but the important thing is, that Shaka’s conscious and we spoke to his family because you imagine seeing that happen live,” he said.
As of Monday morning, no official diagnosis has been made, but he is in stable condition.
Prior to becoming an ESPN broadcaster and analyst, he played professionally for 13 years.
During that time, three seasons were spent with Newcastle United where he appeared in 53 outings for the Magpies. He allowed 54 goals while making 167 saves, piecing together a 28-11-13 record over his time with the club.
Outside of his time with Newcastle, he spent five seasons with West Ham United, three with Portsmouth and two with F.C. Dallas. He also led the Trinidad and Tobago national team during the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
