Loris Karius extends contract with Newcastle United till 2024
By Cade Cracas
Newcastle United has had a fairly active offseason in terms of bringing new players to the club in hopes of making a strong Champions League push for the 2023-24 season. However, while they have been active in bringing in talent, they’ve also been on the ball with locking down some of their own.
On Sunday, June 9, it was announced that the Magpies had opted to extend backup goalkeeper Loris Karius for at least another season until the 2024 summer.
The offer to Karius was sent at the beginning of the summer offseason but was not accepted until the 9th as it is reported he was looking for other contract options.
After accepting his contract, he now reports for preseason practice as the team gears up for an eventful 2023-24 campaign.
German goalkeeper Karius joined the Magpies in September 2022, initially on a short-term deal, and has extended his stay for a second time.
The signing for the Magpies is important as he was relied on for the Carabao Cup Final this past season after starting goalkeeper Nick Pope was suspended. In the 2-0 loss, Karius recorded eight saves after being trusted into one of the biggest spotlights for Newcastle during the season.
That would be the only outing he played for the team during the season.
Prior to being with the Magpies, he played for Union Berlin, Besiktas, Liverpool and Mainz. During his time with Liverpool, he was important playing in 13 Champions League contests.
For Newcastle, having a player that has experience like that is important in the locker room when the tensions get high.
Alongside Karius, the Magpies kept defender Paul Dummett locked down till the 2024 summer as well.
Dummett is the club’s longest-serving current player having joined the club’s Academy aged nine. The defender made his competitive first-team debut in January 2013 and has gone on to make more than 200 appearances for the club.

In the coming weeks it looks like the Magpies will continue to stay active in the market and potentially more players could be joining the upcoming Champions League side towards the tail end of the summer transfer window.
