Allan Saint-Maximin’s time with Newcastle United reaches climax
By Cade Cracas
After the 2022-23 Premier League season came to a close, an ever-evolving storyline arose that winger Allan Saint-Maximin’s time with Newcastle United may have reached its climax.
Saint-Maximin struggled to find legitimate time on the pitch this past campaign, while also succumbing to numerous injuries that kept him out of the loop. However, even when he was active, his style of play rarely fit with the team’s system, meaning his potential departure from the team would not be unwarranted.
Back in early February this past season, Newcastle Toons discussed the struggles that he had throughout the season, and that if he did not improve his future with the club would be up in the air.
Unfortunately, that question mark would slowly dissipate as recently it has grown more likely that the Magpies will move in a different direction without Saint-Maximin this summer.
While it may be a mutual departure, it is believed the 26-year-old wants to be a more regular first-team member instead of his current inconsistent role. However, if the two sides do go their other ways, it will have to come at the hands of the Magpies as he is currently still on a three-year contract.
That contract will pay him £7,000 a week until the 2025-26 summer offseason.
The turning point in the career for him came this past week on June 6th as the Frenchman took to social media stating that this is the “turning point” in his career.
His message also thanked the fans and supporters that have been alongside him throughout his career up until this point. While that message remains fairly broad, it could be hinting towards the fact that he is looking to move to a new club this offseason.
This past season he contributed one goal and five assists through 25 total contests, with prior seasons seeing him hit a max of five goals and five assists, showcasing that the speedy attacker may have hit a plateau.
If the Magpies were to give the 26-year-old a fresh start, he could see his next club come into the Series-A league. For the past few seasons top team, AC Milan, has had their eyes on him to add a wave of speed to their front line.
His current worth sits at roughly £40 million, with a height of roughly £50 million being a reasonable asking price for Newcastle.
This would give the upcoming Champions League squad extra funds to make a few extra transfers and additions this offseason, and would also free up the current wingers, Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy, for more first-team reps.
At this point in time, it seems like both teams need a fresh start, with so much of a career ahead of Maxmin. Newcastle has also emerged into a new era as they return to Champions League play, with the need to improve now instead of looking to train players up.
