Newcastle United could pursue winger Wilfried Zaha this offseason
By Cade Cracas
In recent weeks, Newcastle United has had their attacking group step up and rise to the occasion. However, at times, the ball has been unable to find the back netting.
After finding themselves atop the Premier League table, the front office may look to bring in extra pieces to heighten the ceiling of the offense. Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha may be one for Newcastle to take a look at.
Zaha started his professional career with Crystal Palace in the 2009-10 season. After staying with the club for four years, he then moved to Cardiff City and Manchester United for one season a piece.
Unfortunately, he could not find his footing with either club and returned to Crystal Palace after being away for two seasons. Ever since the 2013-14 season, he has been with the team, producing consistent play for the club.
Through the past nine years, he has started every game except 18 of them. Through his over 300 starts, he has produced 67 goals and 104 assists, averaging roughly 10 assists a season over the last nine.
That consistency is something that could drastically help the inconsistent play of Newcastle United’s top half. If the team is truly looking to compete as a Champions League team in the 2023-24 season, making this type of addition would help.
Zaha has not taken a step back, even though he is approaching his 30s.
He is also taking an average of 50 shots in a season, which showcases that without a lot of volume, he is still able to keep a solid stat line.
His value, heading into the offseason, should sit around roughly €25-30 million, something that Newcastle United could easily afford. Bringing him in would take the weight off of Allan Saint-Maximin, Miguel Almiron and Anthony Gordon.
With his leadership on and off the field, he could prove to be a vital locker room member with the culture manager Eddie Howe is establishing.
