Newcastle United looks to bolster defense with €25 million transfer
By Cade Cracas
Newcastle United has been rumored for practically every player under the sun in recent weeks. Still, newly available left-back Alex Grimaldo may be one that turns the head of certain fans.
Newcastle has had some struggles defensively, specifically on the left side, with Matt Targett and Dan Burn providing inconsistent play. With the addition of Grimaldo, the team would instantly have support on the left side.
While Burn and Targett have been injury prone and lackluster, it has not just been the defense that has struggled from their play, but the offense too. Newcastle United’s system is very reliant on having strong backs that can play the ball forward and help with offensive attacks, something both plays aren’t known for.
Targett can do both at a mediocre level, while Burn has been more defensive-minded.
With that being said, it makes sense for Newcastle to explore new options come the 2023 offseason.
The team is on the brink of an appearance in either the Champions League or European League next season when all is said and done, and if they do in fact clinch an appearance it will be important to have all holes filled.
Currently, Alex Grimaldo is a part of S.L. Benfica but will be available for teams to sign this offseason. His current value sits at €25 million, which is €10 million less than he was valued in 2019.
As his age has slowly climbed, his play has slightly decreased.
Through eight appearances in the 2022-2023 Champions League, as a left-back he helped score three goals while assisting on two others, showcasing that while he can contribute to solid defense, he can also score goals.
Outside of the Champions League, in Liga Portugal, he has appeared in 22 contests and slotted two goals into the back of the net while dishing off eight assists.
In recent weeks, the biggest concern for Newcastle United has been whether or not they can find the back of the net, and outside backs being able to contribute offensively would be a drastic help.
The Saudi Arabian owners of Newcastle have also voiced that the team could see upwards of €200 million in funds available this coming offseason. If that ends up being the case, there is no reason for the team to not bring in Grimaldo, whether or not he is used as a depth piece or a starter.
There have been countless teams rumored in the sweep stakes for the 27-year-old left-back, including powerhouse FC Barcelona, so a bidding war may emerge. If you are Newcastle United, are you taking the leap on him?
