Newcastle United suffered a disappointing 2-0 loss to Manchester United on Sunday, Feb. 26, in the Carabao Cup Final.
But even with the loss, the fans and supporters have not lost hope in the boys who wear the black and white kit.
In the first half, Newcastle United allowed two goals in the first half to Manchester United midfielder Casemiro and forward Marcus Rashford.
Newcastle returned in the second half with an improved performance, with midfielder Joelinton coming closest but having his shot blocked. Unfortunately, their chances all fell just short.
Manager Eddie Howe believed his team clearly looked comfortable and the two goals flattered the scoreline.
“No complaints with how we played, obviously the scoreline doesn’t say that, and that’s where football can be cruel,” Howe said.
Newcastle United was without goalkeeper Nick Pope and forward Anthony Gordon, whose efforts were drastically missed.
What can be taken away from this loss?
The attacking core of Newcastle United needs to be rebuilt entirely. There is no clear-cut star that can lead the team.
Teams like Manchester City have Erling Haaland, Manchester United has Marcus Rashford and Chelsea has Jao Felix, Newcastle United has… Callum Wilson?
Wilson has been extremely inconsistent this season, with injuries plaguing any sort of momentum the 31-year-old. Alongside Wilson, winger Miguel Almiron has been streaky with his offensive production.
Almiron has scored 10 goals in the Premier League this season, but the team cannot just rely on him to find the back of the net.
The team’s owners need to go big or go home this offseason, with a massive spending spree.
Recent reports have surfaced saying that the team may be willing to shell out £250 million this coming summer in hopes of building upon the success they’ve found this year. With the team on the brink of a Champions League, or European League appearance, the team needs to ensure they lockdown a star.
Should you be disappointed?
The simple answer is No.
Newcastle United has made its way from nothing to something, in the span of a year, and the fans need to stay positive.
The team has given its all in recent weeks, the talent just isn’t there and the team feels like it has hit its ceiling. Unless they get lucky, the team just does not have the IT factor to get past high-level teams.
You cannot be disappointed with how the team we have now has held on in big games, we have to be excited for the future and excited for what the new owners can bring to this team.
