Newcastle United looks to take revenge against the team that has given them their only loss in the Premier League of the season, Liverpool, this coming Saturday.
In the last outing between these two teams, the Magpies fell 2-1 with Liverpool finding the winner in the dying stages of the contest.
The heartbreaking loss only fueled the drive for Newcastle as they went on to not lose a Premier League contest since then, which occurred on Aug. 31, 2022.
Fortunately for Newcastle, they have been very consistent in their five most recent contests, winning one and tieing four. However, the same cannot be said for Liverpool who has won just one game, tied one, and lost three, showcasing that the team has had its struggles lately.
Liverpool currently sits ninth in the league with 32 points, while Newcastle is in fourth with 41 points. This contest has less to do with positioning within the table as the season comes to a close, but more to do with revenge for Newcastle United, and the opportunity for them to showcase that they can still hang at the top of the table.
In recent weeks, Newcastle United has struggled to find any sort of offensive rhythm, scoring just three goals in their last four league contests.
While they may be unable to score, other teams have been unable to against them as they’ve allowed just two through the last four. Due in large part to the incredible goalkeeping of Nick Pope and staggering defensive pressure, they will have to rely on what has worked for them all season; keeping the ball out of the back of the net.
Newcastle has given up a league-low, 13 goals on the season, which has held them atop the table. Two of those 13 goals, were given up against Liverpool in their first contest against one another earlier in the year.
The Magpies will have to come out of the gates fast, and showcase that their attacking inconsistencies will not be an issue.
Which player should we be on the lookout for?
This one is simple, Anthony Gordon should be getting his first start as a member of Newcastle United, so he has to be the player to watch.
He shined against West Ham United in his first contest, and then against Bournemouth, he continued to be up in the face of the opposing team’s defense.
With his immense speed and peddle-to-the-metal mentality, he will be full-go out of the gates against Liverpool, especially if he is in the starting 11.
He is also one of those players who builds off of tension and pressure, ultimately building up his confidence on the field.
It would be picture-perfect to see Gordon get his first goal in the white and black against the only team who has given Newcastle United a loss in league play.
Newcastle United will take on Liverpool on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 5:30 P.M. GMT.
