Newcastle United have had a tough time when it comes to getting deals over the line this summer. One player that they are believed to have had two transfer bids rejected for is James Maddison of Leicester City. And it feels like the Magpies have now taken a step back in their pursuit of the midfielder, having not matched the Foxes’ valuation of the player.

But as the performance against Brighton & Hove Albion showed, Newcastle United are still not an elite club and might need a few more additions in order to compete for a top 7 spot.

So while they might not end up signing Maddison, it looks like the club could have their eyes on another midfielder nonetheless.

As reported by The Sun, Newcastle United have made Chelsea midfielder, Conor Gallagher, their prime target in the final weeks of the transfer window.

Gallagher spent the previous season out on loan at Crystal Palace and enjoyed a brilliant time there. He is now back at Chelsea though and looks set to compete for a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s side.

It will be very interesting to see where things go from here, as Chelsea do not seem to be keen on letting go of the midfielder, who is valued at a transfer fee around £40 million.

At the same time though, one has to admit that Gallagher could have a tough time breaking into the Chelsea midfield, which boasts big names like N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic. Thus, could there be a window of opportunity to sign him, if the right offer is made?

It remains to be seen, but Gallagher would be an excellent alternative to Maddison. He has already shown that he is a Premier League-level player, during his time at Crystal Palace. And the youngster would be expected get better moving forward.
