Newcastle United are believed to have been looking for a winger all summer long. Moussa Diaby of Bayer Leverkusen was rumoured to be their top target in the position but the German club were believed to be looking for a transfer fee in the region of £60 million, which the Magpies might not have been too keen to meet.

Since then, the club have been linked with several other wingers as well, with the majority of them already playing in the Premier League like Jack Harrison of Leeds United, Callum Hudson-Odoi of Chelsea, Harvey Barnes of Leicester City and more.

Anthony Gordon of Everton is a name that has done the rounds of the Newcastle United rumour mill as well. The youngster played a huge part in the Toffees staying up last season and good be a solid signing for the Magpies. But it looks like Chelsea are serious about signing him this summer.

As tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are discussing a new proposal for Gordon as opening bid worth £40 million has been turned down by Everton.

Chelsea have made £40 million bid for Newcastle United target Gordon but it has been turned down by Everton

There is no doubt about the fact that Gordon is a very good talent and has been a standout in what is otherwise a very unremarkable Premier League side.

At the same time though, it is hard to see Newcastle United shelling out a transfer fee north of £40 million for a 21-year-old, who is yet to prove that he can get it done at the top and whose statistics are pretty unremarkable, at least on paper.

Thus, it would not be a controversial statement to say that it looks unlikely that Newcastle United will end up signing Gordon from Everton this summer. It remains to be seen if Chelsea do.
