Newcastle United would have gone into the game against Brighton & Hove Albion knowing that it was going to be a tough tie. Both sides had won their respective first games of the Premier League campaign, and had reasons to be confident on the day.

Newcastle United had managed to find their way past a resolute Nottingham Forest defence to get a 2-0 win over them at St James’ Park. On the other hand, Brighton & Hove Albion had travelled to Old Trafford and beaten Manchester United 2-1, in Erik ten Hag’s first competitive game as manager of the club.

Ultimately, when the two sides met, it ended in a goalless draw. But it must be said that Graham Potter’s side looked like the much better team on the day and outplayed the Magpies. Eddie Howe had Nick Pope to thank though for coming out with a point away from home.

Pope’s performance seems to have impressed not only the fans but club legends as well. Alan Shearer tweeted out:

It goes without saying that Brighton & Hove Albion could have easily walked out with all three points on the day if not for Pope’s heroics in goal. Although it must be pointed out that Newcastle United had reasons to think that they could have won on the day as well, as they had a goal ruled out.

Pope was signed from Burnley this summer, after the Clarets were relegated from the Premier League last season and it looks like the decision to bring him in is already paying off.

Many fans were uncertain whether Newcastle United needed a goalkeeper after Martin Dubravka’s performances last season, but they surely must have been happy to have seen Pope in goal on the day.

Pope has had a remarkable few days for sure, going viral on Twitter, was a doubt coming into the game and then not only played but produced a performance of the highest order as well.
