Newcastle United’s summer transfer window is not going as they would have hoped. The predictions were that the Magpies would splash out but they have taken a far more sensible approach to things. While players like Sven Botman and Nick Pope have been brought in, while Matt Targett has also joined permanently after his brilliant loan spell from Aston Villa, the club have not shelled out huge transfer fees for anybody till now.

That is believed to be a massive reason why they have stepped back after being linked with the likes of Moussa Diaby and Alexander Isak.

Another name that could soon join that list is that of James Maddison. There have been suggestions that Newcastle United have failed with two transfer bids for the Leicester City star, and might have now moved their eyes elsewhere instead of going in with a third.

Maddison might have potentially been open to a move to St James’ Park though. As reported by GIVEMESPORT, transfer insider Dean Jones said:

"“Maddison seemed open to a transfer and so they felt that by making an offer to Leicester they might be able to unsettle things a little bit and force something to happen. It hasn’t worked out that way.”"

Maddison seemed open to a move to Newcastle United

It is safe to say that there is no need to panic for Newcastle United at this point of time. The club won their first Premier League game of the season with a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at St James’ Park. And they were one of the best teams in Europe in the second half of the previous campaign as well.

Thus, even if they did not make another signing this summer, they might be more than good enough to finish in the top half of the table.

On the other hand, if they were able to sign someone with the quality of Maddison, it is very possible that they could end up competing for a top 7 finish. At the moment though, it feels unlikely, especially as it looks like Chelsea are closing in on a move for Wesley Fofana.
