Jonjo Shelvey has been a key player for Newcastle United since joining the club back in 2016 from Swansea City. He was one of the Magpies’ bright lights in pre-season as well but would unfortunately end up suffering an injury. And now, it looks like he could be set to spend a significant length of time out on the sidelines.

It was in the pre-season friendly against Benfica, which Newcastle United lost 3-2, that Shelvey ended up picking up a hamstring problem.

The extent of the issue was not known at that point of time and fans would have been hoping that it was not a serious matter. Hamstring injuries are hard to judge, and a player can return in a couple of weeks or be out for months. Unfortunately for Shelvey, it has turned out to be the latter case.

As tweeted out by Keith Downie, Shelvey has undergone hamstring surgery in London and he is set to be out for the next 3 months:

Shelvey set to spend months out on the sidelines in major blow for Newcastle United

It is safe to say that the situation is far from ideal for Shelvey and Newcastle United. With the club in top form, this could have been a big season for the midfielder, but unfortunately, he finds himself out on the sidelines.

The only silver lining that one can find in this entire situation is the fact that the World Cup break in the middle of the season, due to it being played in Qatar, will give Shelvey a chance to get upto pace, before returning to the pitch for Newcastle United.

Newcastle United did manage to make a winning start to their Premier League campaign, by beating Nottingham Forest by a 2-0 scoreline, with Fabian Schar and Callum Wilson getting their names on the scoreboard.
