Newcastle United handed massive Callum Hudson-Odoi chance
Newcastle United have faced an uphill struggle in their quest to sign a winger this summer. They have been linked with a series of names like Moussa Diaby of Bayer Leverkusen, Harvey Barnes of Leicester City, Jack Harrison of Leeds United, Anthony Gordon of Everton and several others. But none of those rumours have led to anywhere of substance.
Another player they have been linked with though is Callum Hudson-Odoi of Chelsea, who has struggled for playing time under the management of Thomas Tuchel. And now, it looks like Newcastle United’s hopes of signing the English winger have been handed a major boost.
As reported by The Guardian, Hudson-Odoi has asked to leave Chelsea on loan before the transfer window slams shut. He was not even named in the matchday squad against Everton. Leicester City and Southampton are two clubs who are believed to be interested in signing him on a temporary basis.
Newcastle United must definitely throw their name into the hat as well, especially considering how many transfer blows they have been handed recently. Thus, the chance to bring in Hudson-Odoi, even if on loan, might be too good to turn down.
Newcastle United must try to sign Hudson-Odoi on loan from Chelsea
While coming through the ranks at Chelsea, Hudson-Odoi was one of the most highly rated talents in world football. He had made a very bright start to his career at the senior level as well and was even linked with an early move to Bayern Munich.
He stayed on at Chelsea though. But an injury suffered early on in his career kept him out for a significant length of time and he has never quite managed to rediscover his explosiveness since then.
Hudson-Odoi has not been helped by the fact that he has had to deal with a number of other injury problems over the years as well, along with the fact that first-team opportunities have been hard to come by.
His potential is immense though and one must remember that he was on the verge of nailing down a spot in the Chelsea starting XI at 18 years of age.
