Newcastle United got their season off to a winning start by beating Nottingham Forest 2-0 at St James’ Park. It was not the easiest of games for the Magpies, as the Premier League newcomers put in a resolute display. But ultimately, Eddie Howe’s side proved to be a bit too much and sealed all three points.

The goals on the day came from Fabian Schar and Callum Wilson, but one man who was particularly impressive despite not getting his name on the scoresheet was Bruno Guimaraes.

Guimaraes arrived at Newcastle United from Lyon in January amid a lot of expectations. And after a slow start to his time at St James’ Park, he has taken things up a notch and has started to deliver on those expectations now. If the Brazilian international can continue to perform like this, there is no reason that the Magpies could not challenge for one of the European qualification spots this season.

Alan Shearer certainly seemed to have been impressed with what he saw from Guimaraes on the day. He tweeted out:

It goes without saying that this is a huge result for the Magpies. They had enjoyed a brilliant second half to the previous season but there were question marks about whether that was just a good run of form or whether Howe’s side were actually the real deal.

It is definitely looking like the Magpies have got a bit to them and could actually shake up the landscape of the Premier League, especially with them expected to make further additions to their squad.

They have already brought in Sven Botman and Nick Pope, while turning Matt Targett’s loan deal permanent. More additions are believed to be in the works further up the pitch though.
