Newcastle United had made a blistering start to the summer by bringing in Sven Botman from Lille and Nick Pope from Burnley, while turning Matt Targett’s loan deal from Aston Villa permanent. Unfortunately though, since then, they have suffered one transfer blow after another, and not been able to add to their options up front, either at striker or on the wings.

Names like Moussa Diaby, Jack Harrison, Harvey Barnes, Armando Broja, Timo Werner and several others have been linked with the club without anything transpiring.

Another name that Newcastle United had been linked with in recent weeks is Maxwel Cornet, who had a very good individual 2021/22 season with Burnley, even though the Clarets ended up getting relegated.

As a result, he is expected to leave Burnley and Newcastle United were believed to be one of the sides interested in signing him. Now though, it looks like the winger will be heading to West Ham United instead. As reported by Lancs Live, David Moyes said:

"“He’s in the building now, so hopefully we can get that concluded.“I couldn’t tell you exactly until everything is done but he’s here at the moment.”"

Newcastle United set to miss out on another transfer target

Thus, unless something unexpected happens, it looks like Newcastle United have missed out on another of their transfer targets.

The situation is not ideal to say the least. Cornet might have actually represented a terrific move, as he is believed to have a £17.5 million release clause. That has to be considered as a bargain fee for a player who has already shown that he can get it done in the Premier League, despite playing in a team that ended up getting relegated.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Cornet scored 9 goals and provided 1 assist in 26 Premier League appearances for Burnley last season.

It looks like Newcastle United’s search for a new winger is set to continue and it remains to be seen who they ultimately end up signing in that position.
