West Ham close to agreeing deal for Newcastle United target

Newcastle United have suffered one blow after another in their attempts to add to their options on the wings this summer. Moussa Diaby was believed to be their number one target but the Magpies appear to have stepped back in recent weeks. Other than the Bayer Leverkusen star, they have also been linked with players like Jack Harrison, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Anthony Gordon, and several others. None of those have materialised till now though.

Another name that has been doing the rounds of the rumour mill recently is that of Burnley’s Maxwel Cornet.

Burnley were relegated from the Premier League last season. On the other hand, Cornet is believed to have a release clause of around £17.5 million in his contract. As a result, it would not be a surprise to see him leave the Clarets this summer.

As reported by The Guardian, West Ham United are close to agreeing a deal to sign Cornet, but they face competition from Newcastle United, Everton and Nottingham Forest. The Hammers are trying to negotiate a lower fee with Burnley though, which could open up the prospect of them being beaten to the signing by another club. However, David Moyes’ side are leading the race.

If West Ham United do end up winning the race to sign Cornet from Burnley this summer, then it will be another in Newcastle United’s quickly growing list of transfer blows.

The situation is far from ideal for the Magpies who have endured a difficult time when it comes to their attempts of making signings recently. It remains to be seen if things improve over the coming weeks.

Cornet could be an excellent addition to the club. Now, it remains to be seen if Newcastle United can beat off competition to win the race for his signature.
