Newcastle United have been linked with a series of Chelsea players in recent times. Some of the names are that of Timo Werner, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Armando Broja, and now, another name has joined that quickly growing list. And that is the name of English midfielder, Ross Barkley.

Barkley had been considered as one of the biggest talents in the country during his early career at Everton but failed to fulfil that potential. There were hopes that a move to Chelsea would revive his career at while there have been flashes of promise here and there, overall, he has remained at the fringes of the first-team squad.

Now, 28 years of age, Barkley needs to take a step as it is unlikely that he will get enough playing time in Thomas Tuchel’s side this season. And it looks like Newcastle United could turn out to be a possible destination for the midfielder.

It looks like the Magpies hold an interest in him in case their attempts to sign James Maddison lead nowhere this summer. As reported by GIVEMESPORT, Dean Jones said:

"“I have heard there is some interest from Newcastle in Ross Barkley, so maybe that is one they turn to later on if the James Maddison offers do not work out. Nothing has developed yet but it seems like there are stumbling blocks with him going back to Everton.”"

It is clear that nothing is advanced at this point of time. But Barkley is certainly an interesting option to consider if a move for Maddison fails to take place.

Although he has been nowhere near the Chelsea starting Xi in recent times, there is no doubt about the fact that Barkley is a solid player and could actually do a job at St James’ Park.

He will not be a huge signing who will push the Magpies to European qualification on his own, but Barkley can be a good contributor to a club vying to finish in the top seven.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, in 100 appearances and 5215 minutes of football for Chelsea, Barkley has scored 12 goals and provided 11 assists.
