Newcastle United have been struggling in the summer transfer market in recent weeks, after having made a blistering start early on. They failed in their attempt to sign French wonderkid, Hugo Ekitike, who has ended up joining PSG instead. Also, they were linked heavily with a move for Moussa Diaby of Bayer Leverkusen, and he was believed to be their top target, but it looks like the Magpies have taken a step back owing to the huge fee it would take to sign him.

Also, Carney Chukwuemeka, another player that Newcastle United were to believed to hold an interest in, is headed for Chelsea. And now, another of their transfer bids has been rejected.

Newcastle United are believed to have made a £40 million offer initially for James Maddison, which was turned down by Leicester City. Then, they put in an improved offer recently for the English midfielder, but that has failed as well.

As reported by The Guardian, Leicester City have rejected Newcastle United’s latest offer for Maddison and are reluctant to part ways with him unless they receive a bid of about £60 million. The Magpies’ second bid is understood to have been around £45 million plus £5 million in add-ons.

Newcastle United have suffered another massive blow in the summer transfer window

It is safe to say that things are not going Newcastle United’s way at this point of time. Not only have they failed to sign a series of players but it also looks like they will have to improve their  offer significantly if they are to sign Maddison.

It is not hard to see why Leicester City might be looking for a big fee for Maddison. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored 18 goals and provided 12 assists in 53 appearances last season.

Thus, someone like him would be an excellent signing for Newcastle United. But at the same time, one has to wonder whether they are open to the idea of shelling out a transfer fee close to £60 million for him.
