Newcastle United have been linked with quite a few players over the past several months. Interestingly, James Maddison was not one of them and as a result, it was a bit of a surprise when it emerged that the Magpies had had a £40 million transfer bid rejected for the Leicester City star.

Despite Leicester City enduring a difficult 2021/22 campaign, Maddison was absolutely brilliant in terms of his output and it is a surprise that he has not been linked with more clubs this summer. He has been linked with a number of the Big Six clubs in the past.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Maddison scored 18 goals and provided 12 assists in 53 appearances for Leicester City across all competitions last season.

Thus, he could be a great signing for the Magpies and it looks like they are not ready to give up on their chances of signing him just yet. As reported by BBC, Newcastle United have made a second bid for Maddison. It is understood to be worth between £40 million and £50 million.

Newcastle United have made second bid for Leicester City’s Maddison

It will be interesting to see if Leicester City are ready to accept the second bid from Newcastle United. Initial rumours had suggested that they would be looking for a transfer fee in the region of £60 million, if they were to let the attacking midfielder go this summer.

But at the same time, one has to point out that Maddison’s current deal with the club runs out in the summer of 2024 and as a result, this might be the Foxes’ last real chance to get a huge transfer fee out of his exit, unless he decides to extend his deal in the future.

This does provide some hope to Newcastle United in their chase for Maddison but at the same time, other Leicester City players like Harvey Barnes, Wesley Fofana and Youri Tielemans are being linked with moves away as well and one would not expect The Foxes to let too many of their stars leave in the same window.
