Newcastle United have had a very tough time when it comes to making signings up front this summer. The club have been linked with a series of strikers and wingers in recent times without managing to get a deal over the line for any of them till now. This list includes the names of players like Hugo Ekitike, Moussa Diaby, Armando Broja, and several others.

Now though, it looks like the club could be finally close to signing a winger, if things go according to plan and the player is none other than Maxwel Cornet of Burnley.

Cornet had been an absolute standout for Burnley last season, even though the Clarets struggled badly as a team. They would end up getting relegated and as a result, he is expected to be on his way out of the club this summer.

As reported by talkSPORT, Newcastle United are ready to trigger the £17.5 million release clause in Cornet’s Burnley contract to get ahead in the race to sign him.

Newcastle United are ready to trigger release clause of Cornet

Cornet could prove to be a great signing for a number of Premier League clubs, considering the performances that he put in last season, even while playing under difficult circumstances in a team that was fighting to stay up in the top flight.

It will be very interesting to see where he ends up this summer. Potential moves to Everton and Nottingham Forest hit stumbling blocks recently. While Chelsea have been rumoured with an interest as well, the Blues have not made a move to sign him till now.

Thus, if Newcastle United act quickly, they might very well be able to get a deal done for him. Let’s see how things go from here on forward but the situation is looking promising.
