Newcastle United have not a good time when it comes to signing a striker this summer. It had looked like they had managed to find a solution to their problems early on, as Hugo Ekitike had appeared to be closing in on a move to St James’ Park. That did not end up happening though and instead, the young French star, whose rise has been compared by many to that of Karim Benzema at Lyon, has ended up joining PSG instead.

On the other hand, Newcastle United have been linked with several other strikers like Alexander Isak, Armando Broja, Duvan Zapata, and several others till now, but none of those rumours have lead nowhere.

As a result, the Magpies still find themselves search for a striker in order to compete with Callum Wilson and Chris Wood, both of whom struggled to find the back of the net last season. And one player that they have been linked with recently is Chelsea’s Timo Werner. But it looks like Newcastle United have suffered a transfer blow in this regard as well.

As reported by Kicker, RB Leipzig did in fact make a move for Werner, but Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel put a stop to his intentions to change clubs.

Newcastle United handed transfer blow by Tuchel in Werner race

Werner was one of the best players in the Bundesliga before moving to Chelsea, but he has struggled to adjust to the English game.

But at the same time, when on top of his game, there is very little doubt about the quality that Werner possesses.

In the season before joining Chelsea, he had scored 28 goals in the Bundesliga campaign. That is more than Erling Haaland ever scored in a single Bundesliga campaign. Thus, the German international does know the way to the back of the net.

Newcastle United making a move for him would have been risky though as there are serious question marks about whether he can get it done in the Premier League level.
