Newcastle United tasted a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Benfica in their pre-season friendly. There were some very promising performances on the day though. Miguel Almiron netted twice while Kieran Trippier got both the assists. On the other hand, Joelinton would get sent off, after picking up a couple of yellow cards against The Eagles.

More important than any result though was the fact that Jonjo Shelvey appeared to pick up an injury vs Benfica. The midfielder has been one of Newcastle United’s best players this pre-season and as a result, this could prove to be a major worry for the Magpies.

As reported by Newcastle World, Shelvey limped out of the Magpies’ 3-2 friendly loss to Benfica. It occurred midway through the second half. This could turn out to be a major worry for Eddie Howe, as the Premier League season is not far away now and the midfielder is one of the key players of this team.

There appears to be a further update on the situation as well as it looks like Shelvey has picked up a hamstring injury. As tweeted out by Lee Ryder:

It is hard to judge how long Shelvey will be out for simply based on the fact that he has picked up a hamstring injury.

Players can return from hamstring injuries in a couple of weeks and they could end up taking several months as well, depending upon the severity of the issue. One can only hope that Shelvey is back as soon as possible.

If Shelvey is out for any considerable length of time though, then it would not be a surprise to see Newcastle United turn towards the summer transfer market and try to sign a replacement for the club’s veteran midfielder.
