Newcastle United are in search of additions up top at this point of time and someone like Memphis Depay would make a lot of sense for the club. The Barcelona star is versatile up top and can play on the left wing or in a central forward position. And it is believed that he could be on his way out of Camp Nou this summer.

Depay just joined Barcelona last summer, on a free transfer. But the club changed managers in the middle of the campaign, bringing in Xavi in order to replace Ronald Koeman. Now, the Dutch international does not appear to be someone with a key role in the starting XI.

Rumours have suggested that Barcelona will be looking for a transfer fee in the region of €20 million to let Depay go. And Newcastle United are one of the clubs believed to be interested in making a move.

But as reported by SPORT, Depay has already said ‘no’ to Tottenham Hotspur and it is likely that he would not be keen on joining Newcastle United either.

Newcastle United handed blow in transfer chase for Depay

Someone like Depay could have been an excellent addition for Newcastle United. He might not have been a massive success at Barcelona but he was brilliant at Lyon before that. And he is one of the key players for the Netherlands national team as well.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Depay scored 13 goals and provided 2 assists in 38 appearances for Barcelona last season.

Also he has previous experience of playing in the Premier League, from his time at Manchester United.

Thus, it is not hard to see why Newcastle United might be interested in a move for Depay but it looks like it will be very difficult to bring the Dutchman to St James’ Park this summer, although you should never say never in football.
