Newcastle United have had to deal with a lot of blows in their chase for a striker this summer. The club are on the lookout to bring someone in who can consistently find the back of the net for them, after seeing both Chris Wood and Callum Wilson struggle to do that last season. But till now, their chase has not been rewarded.

The club had appeared to be close to signing Hugo Ekitike from Stade Reims this summer but that failed to materialise. Instead, the young French striker has ended up joining PSG. On the other hand, the links with Alexander Isak of Real Sociedad and Armando Broja of Chelsea have led nowhere either till now.

Another player that Newcastle United had been linked with is Giovanni Simeone of Hellas Verona. But now, it looks like he is set to join Napoli instead.

As reported by Corriere dello Sport, Napoli is waiting for the final ok from Hellas Verona to close the deal for Simeone.

Newcastle United are on the verge of losing out on another target at striker

It goes without saying that this is far from ideal for Newcastle United. They have been linked with a number of strikers in recent months but have not been able to get a deal over the line for any of them.

Hopefully, that will change soon. It remains to be seen how things go from here on and who Newcastle United end up making a move for.

In terms of Simeone, he seems to be set to become the back up option or potential strike partner for Victor Osimhen at Napoli. The Argentine striker is coming off of a brilliant campaign as well. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored 17 goals and provided 6 assists in 35 appearances last season for Hellas Verona.

Thus, someone in his form might have proven to be a very good signing for Newcastle United.
