Newcastle United have been frustrated in their chase for a striker this summer. It had looked like Hugo Ekitike was going to join the club, after the Magpies had chased his signature since January. But the move failed to materialise this time as well, and the Frenchman signed with Paris Saint-Germain instead. Eddie Howe’s side were linked with Alexander Isak as well but had to drop their interest in the Swede as Real Sociedad were looking for his full release clause.

Thus, it is back to the drawing board for Newcastle United. The Magpies will need to sign another striker though, having seen both Callum Wilson and Chris Wood struggle to find the back of the net last season.

As reported by the Mirror, Newcastle United, West Ham United and Leeds United are all keen on Brentford striker Ivan Toney while Manchester United are also understood to be keeping tabs on him.

It’s like if you have ‘United’ in your name, you want Toney, who to be fair has been very impressive over the last few years.

Toney is coming off of a very impressive season in the top flight with Brentford and has proven that he is capable of playing at this level.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Toney scored 14 goals and provided 6 assists in 37 appearances across all competitions last season.

Those are excellent numbers for a player who was playing League One football with Peterborough United just a couple of seasons back. Now, it is believed that it could take a £50 transfer fee to sign him.

If Newcastle United manage to sign Toney, it would actually be his return to St James’ Park, with the Magpies having signed him back in 2015 as well, although things did not work out that time around.
