Newcastle United have done a wonderful job when it comes to strengthening their defence. They had signed Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn last January, and have signed Sven Botman and Matt Targett permanently this summer. As a result, their backline has to be considered as one of the strongest areas of the team right now if not the very strongest.

At the same time though, the Magpies have had a tough time when it comes to bringing in reinforcements going forward. It had looked like they were closing in on Hugo Ekitike of Stade Reims but now, the French youngster is on his way to PSG. Newcastle United are believed to have had to drop their interest in the likes of Alexander Isak and Moussa Diaby recently as well.

Thus, the situation is far from ideal for the Magpies but they have a wonderful chance to make a move for Barcelona star, Memphis Depay, this summer as he could be on his way out of Camp Nou soon.

As tweeted out by Nicolo Schira, Depay is not in Xavi’s plan for the upcoming season and he will be leaving Barcelona this summer:

It was only last summer that Depay joined Barcelona and in fact, he was believed to be their marquee signing of the window.

But a change in managers in the middle of the 2021/22 campaign, with Xavi replacing Ronald Koeman has left the Dutch international star’s future at the Camp Nou up in the air. There should not be any lack of options for a player of his quality though if he did indeed end up becoming available for a transfer this summer.

Earlier, rumours had suggested that a transfer fee around €20 million would be enough to sign Depay and if that is the case, Newcastle United should definitely make a move to sign him.
