Since the arrival of Eddie Howe as manager, the primary focus of Newcastle United appears to have been on strengthening their defence. One has to say that they have been quite successful in that regard. They had signed Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn in January, and then turned Matt Targett’s loan move permanent this summer while also winning the race for Sven Botman’s signature.

Thus, defence has to be considered as Newcastle United’s biggest strength right now. They must turn their attention towards further up the pitch though.

Newcastle United signed Nick Pope from Burnley this summer and have been linked with another one of The Clarets’ players in the form of Maxwel Cornet.

It is believed that a £17.5 million release clause was activated in Cornet’s contract when Burnley got relegated and as a result, he is expected to depart the club this summer and has been linked with quite a few clubs including Newcastle United. At the moment, Everton might be the favourites for his signature.

Newcastle United have been told to make move for Burnley star

As reported by Football Insider, when asked whether Newcastle United should make a move for Cornet, Gabby Agbonlahor said:

"“100 per cent.“I really like him. I feel like last season he stood out so much in a poor Burnley side.“He’s definitely Premier League quality. For me, it would definitely be a great move.“I feel other clubs should look at him because he’s a very good player.”"

Cornet arrived at Burnley from Lyon last summer and even in a side that would go on to get relegated from the top flight of English football, he managed to stand out.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored 9 goals and provided an assist in 26 Premier League appearances last season.

Cornet is an incredibly versatile player as well. Not only can he play on both the wings but also up front on his own, and in multiple other positions across the pitch if the situation calls for it. Thus, if Newcastle United are able to sign him by activating his release clause, it would have to be considered a bargain for the Magpies.
