Newcastle United made a bright start to the summer transfer window. At first, they made the loan deal for Matt Targett from Aston Villa permanent. Then they signed Nick Pope from Burnley, after the Clarets were relegated last season, and Sven Botman from Lille, after a long and tough chase for the Dutch centre-back.

Since then though, the club have struggled to get deals over the line. It had looked like Hugo Ekitike was on his way to Newcastle United but that move failed to materialise, and instead, he is set to join Paris Saint-Germain now.

On the other hand, the club had been heavily linked with exciting moves for Moussa Diaby of Bayer Leverkusen and Alexander Isak of Real Sociedad, but now rumours suggest that they might not be going after either due to high transfer fees and wage demands.

The situation is far from ideal and some fans are starting to get worried. Eddie Howe has provided a very honest insight into the current situation though. As reported by The Shields Gazette, the Newcastle United manager said:

"“There’s nothing to report, and we’re still in the process of working very hard behind the scenes to try and improve the squad.“That work is continuing every day, even from here. We are keen to add strength to certain areas of the team. It remains to be seen whether we can get a deal done. It’s a difficult window, a difficult market, high prices and very limited availability. I’m sure we can hopefully a land a player who can make a difference to us.”"

One can only hope that Newcastle United are able to find the right solutions over the upcoming weeks and sign some players who can come in to make an impact on the first-team picture at St James’ Park.

Whatever maybe the case, this is a very exciting time to be a Newcastle United fan. The club showed unbelievable improvement in the second half of the previous campaign. Till the turn of the year, they had seemed destined for relegation but instead managed to finish in a respectable 11th position.

Hopefully they can improve upon that this time around and potentially even challenge the traditional big six. For that to happen though, the Magpies might need to make a few more additions.
