Newcastle United need to strengthen in quite a few positions on the pitch this summer, despite having already taken care of their defence. One of those areas is on the wings, where the Magpies do not have a wealth of options right now. As a result, it should not come as a surprise that the club have been linked with quite a few wingers in recent times.

Rumours had suggested that Moussa Diaby of Bayer Leverkusen was Newcastle United’s top target this summer after the Frenchman’s stunning 2021/22 season in the Bundesliga. But with the German club believed to be looking for a transfer fee around £60 million, it does not look like that move will be happening.

The club have also been linked with the likes of Thorgan Hazard and Callum Hudson-Odoi in recent weeks but now, it looks like they might be pushing to sign a Real Madrid winger instead.

As reported by Media Foot (via The Sun), Newcastle United have lodged a £24 million bid for Marco Asensio.

Newcastle United have lodged transfer bid for Real Madrid winger

Asensio was one of the most highly-rated players at Real Madrid when he broke into the first-team picture at the club and many even believed that he was destined for superstardom.

Unfortunately for the Spanish international, that prediction has not come true. He has never quite managed to establish himself as a regular starter for Real Madrid. His current deal with the club runs out in the summer of 2023 and at 26 years of age, it might be time for Asensio to make a decision about his future.

A move away from Real Madrid might be the best step for all parties involved at this point of time, although some rumours have also suggested that he is considering staying on for another season.
