Newcastle United did a wonderful job getting a deal over the line for Sven Botman earlier this summer. He had looked like the club’s top target at centre-back, and even though it had looked like AC Milan was his preferred destination earlier on in the window, the Magpies found a way to get their man from Lille.

It is always great to get your top targets. And with centre-back sorted, another area that Newcastle United seem to be looking to strengthen in is on the wings.

The club have been linked with a number of players in that area over the past few weeks and months like Thorgan Hazard of Borussia Dortmund, Callum Hudson-Odoi of Chelsea and several more, but their top target is always believed to have been Moussa Diaby of Bayer Leverkusen.

The Magpies have not managed to agree a deal for the Frenchman till now but as reported by The Northern Echo, Newcastle United are planning one final push for the Bayer Leverkusen winger before moving on to alternative targets.

It is not hard to understand why Newcastle United appear to rate Diaby so highly. The Frenchman was absolutely stunning last season. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored 17 goals and provided 14 assists in 42 appearances across all competitions.

Also, Diaby is just 23 years of age and has plenty of room for improvement. Bayer Leverkusen are believed to be looking for a transfer fee around €60 million to part ways with him though, which would be steep for any club to shell out.

There would be some questions about Diaby as well. At the end of the day, we have seen several highly-rated players from the Bundesliga struggle to make the adjustment to the Premier League. Timo Werner and Jadon Sancho are prime examples. Thus, Newcastle United must be careful before submitting any huge offers.
