Newcastle United have been linked with a long list of high profile names in recent months and one of the most exciting amongst them was that of Marco Asensio. The Magpies are in need of strengthening on the wings and someone like the Spanish international could have proven to be an incredible addition to the club.
Asensio is a player who was rated very highly when he first broke into the picture at Real Madrid. Many expected him to be a first-team superstar for Los Blancos.
But Asensio has never taken that next step. Now 26 years of age, he is still to establish himself as a starter for Real Madrid and with his current deal believed to be running out next summer, he has naturally been linked with a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu.
If the opportunity is there, Newcastle United should not think twice about making a move for Asensio, but now, it looks like the club have been handed an unexpected blow in that regard.
Newcastle United suffer surprise Asensio transfer blow
As reported by AS, Asensio intends to remain at Real Madrid and fulfil the remaining year of his contract. Following the departures of Gareth Bale, Isco and Luka Jovic, the Spaniard seems to be optimistic about his situation.
This will come as a blow for Newcastle United, as well as other clubs like Liverpool and AC Milan, who were also linked with Asensio.
At the same time though, it will be interesting to see Real Madrid’s plans for Asensio. At the end of the day, if he does see out the final year of his deal with the club, he could very well walk out as a free agent next summer. Thus, this might be the Spanish giants’ last chance to get a transfer fee out of the winger’s exit.
