A new striker has to be near the top of Newcastle United’s transfer wish list for the summer. The club saw both Callum Wilson and Chris Wood struggle to find the back of the net on a consistent basis last season. They will need a prolific goalscorer in their ranks next time around though if they are to improve on their 11th place Premier League finish.

Not too long ago, it was looking like Newcastle United had found their man in the form of Stade Reims’ Hugo Ekitike. The French youngster had enjoyed quite the rise in Ligue 1 last season, and many had even compared his breakthrough to that of Karim Benzema at Lyon, more than a decade ago.

Thus, Newcastle United fans were excited by the prospect of the move but it dragged on for much longer than expected, and now, it appears to be completely off the table, as Ekitike could be set to remain in France.

As reported by Le Parisien (via The Shields Gazette), Paris Saint-Germain have agreed a deal in principle to sign Ekitike.

While nothing is over the line yet, it does feel like Ekitike could now be headed towards PSG while Newcastle United must turn their attention elsewhere.

Someone like Ekitike could have been a fantastic long-term signing for Newcastle United. He showed a lot of attributes during his time at Stade Reims which could potentially lead him to becoming one of the top strikers in Europe one day if he can continue to develop.

But, while missing out on Ekitike could potentially turn out to be a loss for Newcastle United one day, they cannot think about it for too long, with the season fast approaching. The club have been linked with some big name strikers like Victor Osimhen of Napoli and Alexander Isak of Real Sociedad recently. Let’s see who they ultimately end up making a move for.
