Having already signed Sven Botman from Lille, Nick Pope from Burnley and Matt Targett from Aston Villa this summer, most of the recent transfer rumours surrounding Newcastle United have been about a new striker. And the Magpies could certainly do with another option up front, having seen Chris Wood and Callum Wilson struggle to score goals on a consistent basis last season.

The transfer saga involving Hugo Ekitike of Stade Reims appears to have led nowhere as the French youngster seems to be close to joining Paris Saint-Germain.

On the other hand, Newcastle United seem to have moved their eyes towards someone in the middle of his prime in the form of Spanish international Raul de Tomas.

As tweeted out by Matteo Moretto, Newcastle United are interested in De Tomas, while Juventus have also been informed about the situation of the Espanyol striker, who could leave for a transfer fee around €35 million.

If Newcastle United are looking for a reliable goalscorer, De Tomas could just be that. The Espanyol striker is coming off of a brilliant campaign in La Liga.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, De Tomas scored 17 goals and provided 3 assists in 34 La Liga appearances last season.

De Tomas is 27 years of age and should be in the middle of his footballing prime. He seems to be peaking at the right time as well and as a result, a move away from Espanyol might not be too far away in his future.

It remains to be seen if Newcastle United turn out to be the club who end up signing him, with the Magpies having been linked with a long list of strikers in recent times.

Signing De Tomas would come with its fair share of risk though, with the striker having struggled at Benfica, when he had moved away from Spain the last time around.
