Newcastle United have done a wonderful job when it comes to strengthening their options going back. In January, they signed Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn, and this summer, they have brought in Sven Botman, Nick Pope and Matt Targett on permanent deals as well. Thus, defensively, they should be solid next season and it might be time to move their sights further up the pitch.

The Magpies were not great going forward last season and as a result, they could do with a few additions there.

One player that they have been linked with recently is Marco Asensio, who looks set to head out of Real Madrid this summer. It looks like Newcastle United could have some tough competition for the Spaniard’s signature though.

As reported by SPORT [print edition, page 18, July 8, 2022] (via HITC), Jurgen Klopp personally wants Asensio at Liverpool. The Real Madrid has not only been linked with Newcastle United but Arsenal as well.

Liverpool were arguably the best team in all of Europe last season, winning the League Cup and the FA Cup, missing out on the Premier League by a whisker and finishing as runners up in the Champions League.

Asensio has struggled for playing time at Real Madrid and that could be the major reason behind him departing Santiago Bernabeu. But if he ended up leaving the club and joining Liverpool, one has to question whether he would be receive enough minutes on the pitch at Anfield either.

In that situation, and with the World Cup coming up, Arsenal and Newcastle United could both be better options for Asensio.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Asensio. He could be a terrific signing for Newcastle United though, who are believed to be looking for a winger, and have also been linked with the likes of Moussa Diaby, Thorgan Hazard, Callum Hudson-Odoi and others.
