Newcastle United have strengthened their defence significantly ever since the arrival of Eddie Howe as manager. The club had signed Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn last January, and they have signed Matt Targett, on a permanent deal after his great loan spell from Aston Villa, and Sven Botman in the ongoing summer transfer window. They have added to their goalkeeping ranks as well by bringing in Nick Pope from Burnley.

But the Magpies are not expected to stop there and it appears that it is not just their senior ranks that the club are looking to strengthen in.

As reported by Newcastle United’s official website, the club have completed the signing of defender Charlie McArthur from Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock.

McArthur is a Scottish centre-back who is just 17 years of age. He has captained Scotland at the youth level though, and it is one of the country’s brightest young prospects. He made his senior debut for Kilmarnock at the age of 16.

McArthur can prove to be a great long-term signing for Newcastle United if he can continue to develop at the rate at which he did at Kilmarnock till now.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, McArthur made 4 appearances of Kilmarnock last season and featured for 269 minutes of football in total for the Scottish club.

Scottish players have done fantastically in the Premier League in recent times. Some of the names that come to mind immediately are that Kieran Tierney of Arsenal, Andy Robertson of Liverpool, John McGinn of Aston Villa and Scott McTominay of Manchester United.

Newcastle United fans will be hoping that McArthur can add his name to that list, but at 17 years of age, he has plenty of time on this side to reach that level one day.
