Newcastle United have made a blistering start to their summer transfer window by signing Matt Targett from Aston Villa, Sven Botman from Lille and Nick Pope from Burnley, all on permanent deals. The Magpies had also signed Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn in January, and as a result, going back they are expected to be extremely solid. There are other areas of the squad which still need reinforcements though.

One of those areas could be on the wings. And it appears that Newcastle United have a player from Chelsea in their sights.

The player in question is none other than Callum Hudson-Odoi. He has been one of the most highly-rated youngsters at Chelsea for years but has never quite managed to have that breakout season and solidify himself in the starting XI. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 16 goals and provided 22 assists in 126 appearances for Chelsea till now.

As reported by 90min, Hudson-Odoi is of significant interest to Newcastle United even though Moussa Diaby is their top target on the wings.

Hudson-Odoi was expected to be the next big thing at Chelsea and had put in some very impressive performances during the time of Maurizio Sarri as manager. But he would end up suffering an injury at the wrong time, just when he had started to establish himself in the starting XI.

Since his return from that injury, he has never quite looked as explosive or as direct, as he had early on in his career.

There have been spells where he has looked good, but then, he ends up suffering one setback or another, and his career has never quite kicked on after the early promise.

Hudson-Odoi is still just 21 years of age though and there is plenty of time for him to realise his full potential, and as a result, if Newcastle United are able to sign him, it would be a major coup for the Magpies.
